Contributions and accomplishments of women in NSW councils

The prestigious Minister’s Awards for Women in Local Government celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of women in NSW councils. In addition to recognising the significant contribution of the annual winners, the awards aim to encourage more women to take on leadership roles in local government in NSW.

Across NSW, countless women are playing a vital role in creating stronger local councils and making their local community a better place to live, work and play. Established in 2008, the awards recognise the outstanding efforts of such women, who contribute at the grassroots level of government in metropolitan and regional/rural areas.

Awards in each category are presented to both metropolitan and regional/rural council winners, including those in county councils and joint organisations. The categories are:

  • Alternative Pathways Award – for a female staff member who is breaking down gender barriers and stereotypes
  • Champion of Change Award – for a male and female general manager or senior manager who has excelled in supporting and encouraging women’s participation at their council
  • Elected Representative Award – for a female councillor who has advanced the position of female elected representatives
  • Employment Diversity Award – for a successful council program to increase female participation in senior leadership roles or at the elected representative level
  • Woman of Distinction Award – for a woman who has demonstrated exceptional initiative, innovation, excellence and integrity or who has a positive influence on their peers and others
  • Young Achiever’s Award – for an outstanding female staff member (including trainees and apprentices) aged 25 and under.
  • Councillor Lilliane Brady OAM Award* – winner is determined by the Minister for Local Government to recognise and honour the dedication and tireless work of a female council staff member or elected representative.

*In 2020, the late Cobar Mayor Lilliane Brady OAM was the inaugural recipient of what was then known as the Minister for Local Government Award for Women. The award was renamed to honour Cr Brady's extraordinary career as the state’s longest serving female mayor and to recognise her advocacy for women in the sector.
