Lifetime Achievement Award 2016
Few people have had a career as distinguished as Norma Male. Norma was NSW’s first female Town Clerk and possibly the first in Australia.
Norma was appointed Town Clerk of Balranald Municipal Council in 1944 after working at Cootamundra Municipal Council where she was credited with starting and assisting the careers of many people in local government.
Her work in local government has seen her receive a number of accolades, including an Order of Australia medal in 1975 and being featured in the National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame in Alice Springs under the category “Leaders of Men”.
Norma’s tenacity and capability saw her deliver an incredible range of benefits to the Balranald community that she served. This includes the establishment of the Western Shires Dental Service and a baby health centre and library.
Norma was nominated by Donna Rygate, Chief Executive of Local Government NSW.
