Winner of the Award – Sharon Ross, Parkes Shire Council.
Sharon is the Manager Support Services at Parkes Shire Council. In this role she has been the driving force behind a major redevelopment of the Parkes Regional Airport, and the construction of a playground at Parkes Pool to create a family precinct as part of the redevelopment of the site.
Sharon led the review of Council’s truck fleet – a cost- and time-saving initiative. She also initiated a small plant and equipment program which reduced Council’s expenditure with hire companies from $250,000 to $50,000 per year.
Sharon instituted a health and wellness program for Council employees, where two-thirds of Council’s staff participated to achieve an average weight loss of 3kg per participant, and a third of all staff undertook a walking challenge.
Sharon provides guidance and inspiration through leading by example. She has seen many projects through to fruition, and strives for staff improvement, providing resources and encouragement to improve. Sharon sees opportunity and ability, and strongly encourages open and honest communication and respect. She encourages staff to share resources and information, learn new skills and embrace new technologies.
Sharon manages a team of predominantly men. Regionally she is the only female manager with a portfolio including airports, stores and workshops, administration and swimming pools.
