The Office of Local Government is seeking your views about the Impounding Act 1993
What’s this about?
The NSW Government is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of the Impounding Act 1993 (the Act). The Act is designed to protect safety and amenity in public spaces. It enables councils and other public land managers to deal with the negative impacts of abandoned items and stray animals. It aims to help balance the convenience of using new technologies with preserving amenity for different groups of people wanting to use and enjoy public spaces.
A Discussion Paper about the review of the Act has been released for public comment. The Office of Local Government (OLG) is seeking feedback on whether the Act remains effective for managing animals and other items left in public spaces. This captures the impact of items like shopping trolleys, boat trailers, share bikes, abandoned cars, e-scooters and wandering stock.
This is an opportunity for the community to help identify how best to regulate these matters given emerging technologies and the ever-changing use of public spaces in NSW.
Feedback to the Discussion Paper will inform the next stages of the review process into 2020 and may be made until 5pm on Friday 20 March 2020.
