To encourage more organisational stability and community confidence, the NSW Government has granted a three-month extension for the interim administrator of Wingecarribee Shire Council.
Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock said it followed a request from interim administrator Viv May PSM for more time so he can continue to address the cultural, reputational and organisational issues facing Wingecarribee Shire Council.
“The interim administrator’s report makes a strong case for more time to restore organisational stability and community confidence in Wingecarribee Shire Council,” Mrs Hancock said.
“I am satisfied that this extension, beyond the current three-month suspension period ending on June 11, is necessary to allow Mr May to continue his efforts to reinstate the proper and effective functioning of Wingecarribee Shire Council.
“This includes organisational restructuring, improving work health and safety conditions for staff, conducting reviews, strengthening decision making and community engagement.
“Mr May has done an outstanding job to date and I thank him for his efforts in challenging circumstances.
“The suspension period will now be extended until the upcoming Local Government Elections and will expire on September 10 in time for the first meeting of the newly-elected Wingecarribee Shire Council.
“The NSW Government is committed to ensuring the local community has a council that is serving its best interests.”
Under the Local Government Act, the Minister can extend the period of suspension for up to three months if she believes it is necessary to restore the proper or effective functioning of the council.
As required by law, notice has been served on the Wingecarribee Shire Council, advising of the intention to extend the period of suspension.
The order to formally extend suspension until the September council elections will be published in the Government Gazette.
