My pet is from outside NSW. How do I register them?
If your pet was born and microchipped interstate or overseas, it was not recorded on the NSW Pet Registry. Now that you and your pet live in NSW, you must follow the steps below to register.
-
1. Make sure you have the correct proof of ownership
You must be able to demonstrate that you are the current owner of the cat or dog. This can include:
- Certificate of Registration from another state or country.
- Purchase receipt with the pet’s microchip number and your name as owner
- Change of ownership paperwork
-
2. Verify your pet's microchip number
Ask an authorised identifier such as a vet to verify your pet’s microchip number. They will record it on a Verification of existing microchip (M1) (PDF, 152 KB) form.
-
3. Provide paperwork to your local council
Submit the following to your local council:
- completed M1 form
- relevant proof of ownership (contact your council to confirm their requirements)
- a desexing certificate, if applicable
- completed Pet Registration R2 form
- the registration fee
